Africa would be able to fulfill only about 13% of its food needs by 2050. Systemic challenges such as postharvest loss cut across the agricultural value chain and represent an opportunity for integration and optimization, with space technologies serving as a backbone for information generation, transmission, route optimization, and decision support. The chapter reviews space-based applications in support of decision-making processes of policy makers and presents a conceptual framework for their implementation in agriculture in general with postharvest loss reduction as an example.
