Abstract Perhaps the most important decision of a manned Mars expedition will be choosing a mission design. A mission design, or mission architecture, consists of several complex and inter-related variables such as propulsive maneuvers, crew support, aero assist requirements, habitation, and atmospheric entry system requirements. Mission architecture also describes a combination of modes specific to the mission, the assigning of flight elements such as the launch vehicle and, in the case of establishing a Martian outpost, a description of the activities performed on the surface. Before describing some of the many mission architecture suggested for a manned Mars mission, it is useful to understand some of the elements common to each.
