The turbocharger rotor of marine Diesel engine receives energy from exhaust gas, and creates more charging air to the cylinders to improve the power and efficiency of the engine. The working condition of turbocharger is very severe with the revolutions from 15,000 to 30,000 rpm at temperature over 600 °C, and the presence of burning soot and harmful substance such as NOx, H-2S, COx, etc. from inlet air and exhaust gas. Furthermore, exhaust gas may contain the broken metal pieces of damaged parts in the combustion chamber of an engine and blow them into the turbocharger. Due to these special characteristics, the turbocharger may be impacted and worn, and caused dynamic unbalance in operation. In this study, the authors will present the possibility causing dynamic unbalance of turbocharger rotor in operation and the direct influence to the working process of an engine. This may be useful for the operational engineers in the engine trouble-shootings related to the dynamic unbalance of turbocharger rotor, and give the best solutions accordingly to maintain the safe and effective working of engine.
