Abstract The increasing preoccupation about railway externalities, such as train-induced vibrations, has prompted the incorporation of bituminous materials as a part of the railway infrastructure. In this paper, the structural and dynamic behavior of a real asphalt slab track, made of a mixture SMA-16 with a 0.5% of recycled plastomers is studied with a FEM model of the vehicle and the track considering both vertical and lateral dynamics. The FEM model is used to study the different dynamic behavior on the track surroundings due to the effect of the trains passing at different speeds. The paper has two main purposes. One is to provide the differences in dynamic response for straight and curved sections at three different speeds. The other aim of the paper is to obtain high tangential stresses in the interfaces between the different layers of the infrastructure. The results reveal how the structural behavior of the track is checked and demonstrate the important role of horizontal accelerations induced in the infrastructure.
