Abstract Indoor environments represent one of the most challenging environments for navigation applications. At the same time they belong — together with densely populated urban areas — to the key target areas for Location-based Services, requiring a mandatory positioning and optional guidance component. The limitations of existing and future satellite navigation systems in indoor environments raise the need to implement customised technical solutions. The paper presents a generic technical concept for an indoor navigation and guidance system for Location-based Services using a combination of navigation systems with mobile communication and data transmission systems, as well as mobile information processing.
