The space vector (SVM) modulation, also known as SVPWM, is increasingly replacing more traditional modulations such as six-step and sinusoidal modulation as it provides better use of the available DC-link voltage and a reduction in harmonic content. However, some of the limitations of the VSI mean that the maximum efficiency of the SVM cannot be obtained, such as the limitation of the maximum and minimum width of the pulses, and the deadtime that avoids the shoot-through in the half-bridge structure. Today’s Microcontroller/Digital Signal Processor (DSP) allow the algorithm that implements the SVM to be performed in a simple manner, especially if they have trigonometric functions such as the sine. Also if the model-based design is approached, such as the one presented in this chapter, thorough model testing is assured a correct operation prior to its implementation in a real hardware. Moreover, the model can generate the C-code of the SVM algorithm necessary for the microcontroller/DSP. In this chapter, the theory of SVM in its two modes, continuous and discontinuous, deadtime compensation, model-based design using MATLAB and Simulink, simulations, and the experimental results will be seen.
