Internal combustion engines can fill the role of rotating a propeller or main rotor, being the baseline powerplant approach from the early days of powered flight. Cycle analyses for spark-ignition and compression-ignition piston engine variants are presented in this chapter. The rotary engine approach as a competitive alternative is discussed. The use of supercharging and turbosupercharging to maintain engine performance at altitude is also covered. The final portion of the chapter presents a discussion on the alternative powerplant approaches being proposed and used for small unmanned air vehicles.
