The design conditions for regular observer based residual filters for linear discrete-time descriptor systems are presented in the paper, where the problem is stated in combination of linear matrix inequalities and a linear matrix equality. Based on such formulation, they provide a regular interpretation of the problem of designing stable observers for descriptor systems. The results are illustrated by a numerical example in the context of descriptor systems subject to additive fault with projecting the state estimation error to fault residuals.
