In the automotive industry, there is a continued need to improve the development process and handle the increasing complexity of the overall vehicle system. One major step in this process is a comprehensive and complementary approach to both simulation and testing. Knowledge of the overall dynamic vehicle behavior is becoming increasingly important for the development of new control concepts such as integrated vehicle dynamics control aiming to improve handling quality and ride comfort. However, with current wellestablished test systems, only separated and isolated aspects of vehicle dynamics can be evaluated.

    The Research Institute for Automotive Engineering and Powertrain Systems Stuttgart (FKFS) and Institute for Automotive Engineering Stuttgart (IFS) at Stuttgart University jointly operate a Handling Roadway (HRW) Test System which allows testing of a vehicle’s combined longitudinal, lateral and vertical characteristics and therefore provides the possibility to supplement road testing with integrated vehicle testing under laboratory conditions.

    One of the test system’s applications is the characterization of driving dynamics characteristics by conducting driving maneuvers comparable to tests on a proving ground. Certain inherent limitations of the test system lead to differences in the measured vehicle behavior compared to the behavior on the road. These limitations include differences in the tire behavior, missing coupling effects due to restrained degrees of freedom, and adverse influences of the actuators’ transfer behavior during dynamic maneuvers.

    This paper presents various methods to compensate for these limitations. The main focus is on the effects caused by the actuators’ transfer behavior. Different model-based and iterative approaches have been developed, a combination of which leads to a holistic procedure to conduct driving dynamics tests. The measured vehicle behavior shows greatly improved accordance with measurements on the road.
