Although most computer-controlled cyber-physical systems share a lot in common—after all, they all carry CPUs, memories, sensors, actuators, operating systems, and application software—the fact their underlying behavior is largely architecture and mission dependent requires creating unique sets of commands and responses to manage this unique behavior. This chapter delves into the challenges present while operating bad-tempered systems over unreliable, noisy channels, and how designers’ choices on commands and response’s become critical to ensure a sound operation.
