The N’Djamena-Moundou corridor is one of the most strategic axes in Chad; however, it is not complemented by an adequate level of safety. In fact, more than 60% of the crashes on main roads occurred along this corridor.
To evaluate all aspects of road safety, an integrated approach was followed that combines Road Safety Inspection (RSI), Road Safety Audit (RSA), and Road Safety Impact Assessment.
The first step was to identify the safety problems affecting the road, and then, a risk assessment was carried out on the existing road using the iRAP methodology. Maintaining the same road features but considering a specific traffic projection, the “Without Project” (WOP) scenario was assessed. The review of detailed design documents enabled the safety analysis of the “With Project” (WP) scenario. Through the iRAP methodology, quantitative comparisons were made between the risk level of the WOP and WP scenarios. A RSA was conducted on the design to identify remaining safety problems. Therefore, the WP after RSA scenario was assessed, which includes the proposed feasible mitigation measures.
The results of the risk assessment showed that the WP after RSA scenario led to a great improvement in safety for all road users.
