We begin our consideration of high-performance monohull craft in the time of the Greek golden age. In the period from 500bc to Roman times, the Greeks were masters of the Mediterranean based mainly on their design of fast man-powered craft driven by banks of oars. We navigate the development of monohulls from this beginning through introduction of mechanical power through different hull geometries and appendices to minimize drag and control trim. We consider the influence of different missions from the military through racing to commercial ferries that guide selection of the configurations and take a look at where this may be leading as the twenty-first century matures.
