There is an increased urgency to prepare seafarers for the autonomous age as the advent of autonomous ships is no longer a pipe dream but a reality. Seafarer training has evolved over time as technology has introduced ever more sophisticated navigation systems and equipment and the time to modify our approach to training for autonomous ships has arrived. The debate includes the degree and scope of autonomy of ships and the trade they are involved in on the one hand and on the other the resultant changes to the roles of seafarers aboard. Fully autonomous ships will be under the control of computerised mechanisms, and the assumption that seafarers aboard will need to be empowered to monitor, maintain and possibly repair these systems indicates the magnitude of change that needs to take place. This paper will present a model of vessel autonomy leading to some assumptions concerning human involvement and will finally propose the changes in seafarer training to accommodate the age of autonomy.
