Overcoming the doubts expressed before the mission about the ability of the two astronauts to endure more than a week together in a small spacecraft, fulfil their objectives and still end the mission on friendly terms and in good health, the Gemini 5 astronauts achieved their aim of almost a full eight days in space. The historic mission was only terminated one orbit early due to approaching adverse weather in the landing area. After a brief conversation with fellow astronaut and Sealab II crewmember Scott Carpenter, who was embarking on a record 28-day stay underwater, the Gemini 5 mission concluded with a successful splashdown and recovery on August 29, 1965, setting a new endurance record of over 190 hours. It was a milestone, but one that was expected to be surpassed by another Gemini crew just a few months later.
