Abstract The formula predicting the sediment transport rate induced by the interactions between short waves and group-bounded long wave is mathematically derived using Bailard's immersed weight sediment transport rate formula and the expansion of flow moments. As the first step for studying the influence of group-bounded long wave on the sediment transport rate, a regular wave groups which may be easily generated by the linear combination of monochromatic waves is used. From the numerical experiments, it is found that the group-bounded long wave plays an important role in the bottom sediment transport mechanism under wave groups. In particular, the group-bounded long wave tends to move the bottom sediment toward the direction of down slope or offshore. Also, the suspended load is more affected than the bed load by the group-bounded long wave. These are consistent with the field data which wave groups results in higher concentrations of suspended sand.
