The development of cities has improved the quality of life of citizens thanks to the multiplicity of services in the urban context, but, on the other hand, it has produced many negative effects not only on the health but also on the livability of the environment. In fact, the urban environment has changed to accommodate cars rather than people, creating difficulties for users who need to move without barriers. Nowadays, in many cities there is a deep gap among people and the surrounding environment, above all considering users with physical impairments who are forced to face many challenges to carry out ordinary actions such as mobility, which is a human right and not an element of discrimination. Cities should be suitable for all citizens and facilitate the movement of all citizens, free from any architectural barrier or physical impairment, finding accessible that meet their special needs and preferences.

The chapter aims to make a contribution to understand the mobility needs of people with physical impairments, improving the technologies that favor their inclusion in urban life. In particular, a new model of wheelchair for urban use is presented, characterized by high performance, as it is capable of bridging the gap deriving from the trade-off among weight, portability, and comfort.
