The railway is necessary for the objective of the sustainable mobility of European Union. Whereas significant disparities between the railway infrastructures and rolling stock of the various member States, the volume of goods and the proportion of passengers transported by rail throughout the European Union is being continually effected, therefore the trans-European rail traffic requires a reliable level of interoperability of national railway system. Apparently, the safety rules play an essential role in the areas of interoperability, it calls for a common transparent safety evaluation approach. The chapter presents a model-based methodology for modelling and verification of the railway interlocking systems under the French national signaling rules, which aims to use colored Petri nets to effectively ensure railway traffic safety. First, a generic and compact modelling framework is introduced, in which the interlocking rules are modelled in a hierarchical structure, while the railway layout is modelled in a geographical perspective. Second, a modelling pattern is presented. It is a general reusable solution that can be applied in different stations. Then, an event-based concept is brought into the modelling process of low-level part of railway interlocking system to have a better description of internal interactions of low-level relay-based interlocking logic. All these works at different levels contribute toward a global safe analysis framework.
