The present paper examines the performance of the Indian automobile Industry (IAI) in terms of total factor productivity (TFP) and also identifies the key drivers of the automobile industry. TFP of the automobile industry has been estimated by the non-parametric Malmquist approach from 2001 to 2020 by using secondary data from the source of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturing (SIAM), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and Ministry of Commerce and Industry. To identify the key drivers of the automobile industry, we have used regression analysis. The results reveal that the performance of the IAI has improved over the period because of significant improvements in key drivers like trade openness and innovation (research & development), have positive impact on the growth of productivity and the change in technical efficiency in the IAI. This paper suggests enhancing technical efficiency through strengthening the regulation policies and establishing an advanced system of technology and innovation.
