This paper describes the design, development, construction and demonstration of a hybrid (sail and electric motor) powered, small, robotic research vessel. The two-metre vessel is capable of speeds of up to five knots under sail and six knots using an electric motor without the need for human interaction. It is launchable by two people from the beach or a vessel. Plans are presented for scaling this design up to a 4.85 metre long version capable of reaching 10 knots when motoring.
