The turboprop and turboshaft are gas turbine engine variants that exploit the availability of high shaft power to deliver the thrust required for a number of flight applications in the subsonic regime. The use of a free power turbine allows for more operational flexibility in rotating the propeller or main rotor at the desired rate. Cycle analysis for a turboprop engine is covered in some detail in this chapter, with associated material concerning the analysis of turboshaft engines also provided. Design considerations are discussed throughout the chapter, with engine installation issues covered in the chapter’s final section.
