Abstract Several measures of accuracy have been applied to the results of traffic assignments as part of research into cost vs. accuracy tradeoffs involved in incremental traffic assignment methods. The theoretical and practical considerations of formulating useful accuracy measures lead to a priori conclusions about the behavior of the measures being considered. These conclusions are generally borne out by the results obtained when they are applied to assignments on a fairly large (800 links) highway network. The behavior of the measures leads to conclusions about the sensitivity of the assignment procedure itself. The results also demonstrate the limitations of certain accuracy measures and suggestions are made as to alternative formulations which should provide more useful measures, both for the incremental assignment methods considered and also for iterative, full equilibrium procedures.
