Abstract Seaports are the focus of a broad spectrum of maritime activities generating significant jobs and economic growth. The port in relation to trade, serves as both a gateway and a terminal for a country’s international trade. This paper examines the spatio-temporal pattern of port development in Nigeria focusing on the evolution of the seaports, the traffic they handle and factors of port development. Although interactions existed in the coast long before the 14th Century, trade relations between Nigeria and Britain stimulated the development of the ports. Port development during early period was characterised by concentration and diffusion processes. However, there has been a sort of port consolidation with Lagos as the point of sustained port dominance. Expansion and development of modern ports overtime was initiated as a result of increase in port traffic. Between 1990 and 2005, there was an increase in the number of vessels that entered the ports, net registered and gross registered tonnage, cargo throughput and container traffic while passenger traffic declined at the ports. Overall, there is significant port development in the country. The factors that explain this trend are political and economic factors.
