Abstract Sustainable development of transport triggers changes targeting reduction of emission of harmful substances and noise, and by that means also fostering more eco-friendly solutions. Particularly with regard to urban areas, these changes must not be limited to the “hard” (i.e. infrastructural) activities only. Emphasis is mainly placed on two aspects, i.e. development of modern supporting technologies (including ITS) and changes in habits of the travelling population. Behaviour patters of travellers constitute a particularly important element in the process of appropriately shaping the future of transport systems. This article highlights the matter of responsible travel planning understood as a more environmentally aware approach to the effects of transport. Contemporary tools known as trip planners provide assistance for planning of travels as well as for appropriate flow of information about alternative travelling modes to the travelling person. The requirements typically applied to similar planners have been discussed using the example of a tool developed for research purposes, namely GT Planner. The trip planner described in the paper is a universal platform enabling transfer of information on the available travel options, using additional criteria which make it possible to travel in a more eco-friendly manner.
