Abstract The article addresses selected outcomes achieved by developing a traffic model for the Upper Silesian conurbation area under the international Green Travelling project implemented within the framework of the ERANET Transport III programme. The focal point was the travelling distance considered as one of fundamental determinants of the choice of a travelling mode. From a multitude of different travelling modes, the two with the largest number of travels being made by their means were chosen for comparison, namely a passenger car and public transport. In the latter case, a differentiation was made at the modelling stage between a direct travel (without changing) and travel with changing (when it was necessary to change to another means of public transport). The research has evidenced that there are clear dependences between the distribution of frequency of travelling (by different modes) in the function of distance and the motivation to travel.
