Abstract Numerical and experimental methods are developed for solving elasticas of the tapered cantilever beam subjected to a tip vertical load and a linearly varying distributed load. Properties of the cross section of tapered member with constant volume are considered, in which three kinds of taper type, i.e., linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers, are selected. Non-linear differential equations governing the elastica of such beam are derived based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The Runge-Kutta and Regula-Falsi methods are used to solve differential equations and to compute the tip horizontal deflections. Extensive numerical results of the elastica, including the tip horizontal and vertical deflections and tip rotations, are presented in the non-dimensional forms. In addition, section ratios of the optimal beam which cause the minimum tip deflections are determined from computed results of the elastica. Experimental studies are presented that complement the theoretical results.
