Substantial safe arming distance of artillery projectile exiting from muzzle is essential for safety of gun crew and munitions stock pile. This safe arming distance is ensured by delaying the arming sequence of artillery fuze. Among several mechanisms used to delay the arming sequence, the pin pellet runaway escapement mechanism provides the reliable solution while maintaining the overall functionality of the fuze intact. However, each runaway escapement mechanism is designed for a specific projectile considering its muzzle velocities and corresponding minimum/maximum ranges. Therefore it’s necessary to analyze design parameters of runaway escapement to ensure that it provides the required time delay even if it is to be used for another caliber munition. This paper provides detailed working of a typical artillery fuze containing pin pellet mechanism, its explosive elements details, design of its pin pellet escapement mechanism, choosing design input parameters and calculating the rest of needed geometrical parameters to construct the geometry of the mechanism, linkage of escapement mechanism with gear reduction train and finally complete mechanism’s dynamic simulation to ensure prevention of jamming and free running of escapement wheel. Finally results in the form of escapement wheel angular position/velocity are provided to comment on its working and utilization for other caliber projectiles.
