The main purpose of the railway brake system is the control of the longitudinal behaviour of the rail vehicle, i.e. decelerating the train, maintaining its velocity and keeping it static for a potentially indefinite time. Additionally the vertical and lateral dynamics have an influence on braking behaviour and performance.
