Ship design can be considered as a process of incremental information refinement. This makes the product information model concept well suited for the design process. Support for concurrent engineering as well as object stage transitions play important roles in the shortening of the total design time. The product information model concept should therefore also encapsulate the stage transitions of the design process where the information increment depends on the implemented process. Management of the design process stage transitions benefits from domain- tailored, built-in data management support.
