A rear underrun protection device (RUPD) is mounted on heavy vehicles to avoid underrunning small passenger vehicles during rear collisions. This RUPD, before installation on the vehicle, is tested as per the standard IS 14812:2021. This standard is applied to vehicles of categories having high GVW and carrying passengers or goods. According to the standard, RUPD is subjected by applying longitudinal loads at three locations on RUPD. This test can be performed according to the setup created using Creo parametric software, as shown in this paper. Two structural designs, a square cross section and a C channel, are designed in Creo parametric software. This paper uses three materials, namely carbon fiber, copper alloy, and BSK 46, to solve this problem statement using transient structural analysis in ANSYS workbench. Beyond material selection, other parameters such as mass, cost, and maximum strain energy absorbed by the RUPD are also considered when selecting the most optimal RUPD. Finally, RUPD with carbon fiber material and a square structure is selected, which is light in weight, cost-effective, and provides better strength.
