Environmental-friendliness has become a dominant driver for the development towards real driving emission (RDE)-compliant powertrains. Upcoming emission legislations, like Euro 7 or China 7, may pose further challenges, such that the question arises how they can be addressed. Ultimately, a combustion engine with zero environmental impact could be the target, causing lower pollutant emissions than the pollutant already contained in the ambient air, effectively cleaning the inner-city air.

An exhaust aftertreatment system for a 2.0 l turbocharged Gasoline direct injection engine enabling Zero Impact emissions is identified using a real driving emission simulation approach and measurements of novel exhaust gas aftertreatment systems. The results indicate that substantial further emission reductions towards the Zero Impact goal are attainable. NOX emissions in WLTC can be reduced by 99.9 % compared to today's legislative Euro 6d requirements. As a result of electrical pre-heating of the exhaust aftertreatment system, the fuel consumption increases by 5.3 %. Under wider real driving conditions like cold temperatures, higher dynamic driving or short distance urban cycles, the emissions increase slightly, but stay much lower than the actual vehicle fleet. The exhaust aftertreatment system is realized as a prototype and first validation measurements are performed. The knowledge gained throughout the investigations can be used to tailor exhaust aftertreatment system for Euro 7 requirements with less fuel consumption drawback.
