Abstract In the present study, behaviour of ceramic/metal composite targets under normal impact of 7.62 AP projectiles is studied. Extensive literature variety was carried out to understand the behaviour of ceramic materials. Salient features of ceramics for impact resistance are highlighted. Johnson–Holmquist model is considered for ceramic materials and Johnson–Cook model is considered for metal has been adopted. Material behaviour modelling is categorized in three parts, namely strength model, failure model and equation of state. For simulating impact behaviour of ceramic/metal composite panel, AUTODYN software has been adopted. The impact velocities of projectile are considered in the range of 660–750 m/s. Studies are conducted to evaluate residual velocities and effect of the thickness ratio of target plates on ballistic limit of ceramic/metal composite panels. A validation study is carried out to obtain the appropriate material parameter based on reported literature for normal impacts. Parametric study is conducted by varying the plate thickness ratios to understand their effect on the performance of ceramic/metal composite panel. Based on the parametric study an efficient configuration having thickness ratio 0.5 is obtained and further investigated using 3D finite element model. The results are found to be the same as obtained from axisymmetric finite element model. An increase of 8.33% in ballistic limit has been observed for a reduction of about 2.87% in the areal density as compared to configuration having the ceramic/metal plate thickness ratio 1.0. Hence, it may be concluded that thickness ratio of front- and backplates play an important role in the design of impact resistant composite panels.
