Abstract This chapter provides the history of engine development from the first decades using propellers and piston engines to gas turbine engines. The jet engine era allowed for a steep increase in aircraft speed up to Mach 0.85. The chapter details the improvements in gas turbines from the early turbojet through turbofans that have generated a large improvement in thrust-specific fuel consumption (TSFC, fuel economy). The final section of this chapter discusses the function of the gas turbine nacelle and its use for thrust reversing upon landing.
