Bus lanes are commonly used as one of the options to give priority for public transport. Unfortunately, they substantially decrease the capacity of a road which could even be a reason to refuse from their introduction. That is why the challenge to optimize their usage starts to be crucial. In this article the issue of bus lanes in Poland is considered including the discussion about their signature and its legal basis, as well as types of vehicles, which are allowed to move on them in different cities. Additionally, the idea is discussed that any lane assignment could be inverted, e.g., by being allowed only for buses and high occupancy private cars to use it. In such a way, this idea, named “queue management” by the authors, could be applied where a simple bus lane cannot be effectively used, e.g., when the bus traffic volume is too small. In the end, the outcomes of its successful verification with a microsimulation model are presented.
