Summary Sydney’s Epping to Chatswood Rail Link (ECRL) is a landmark rail tunnel project (12.5 km long) which opened to the public in 2009. During commissioning, in-car passenger noise levels within older style non-air-conditioned trains were found to exceed 100dBA at some locations. Several noise mitigation strategies were optimised and implemented within a short timeframe to reduce in-car noise levels by an average of 10dBA. These included a new rail grinding technique, installation of additional sound absorptive panels on the walls and between the rails, and rail dampers (in a tunnel environment). This paper presents a summary of the works undertaken to mitigate in-car noise, calculation methods and achieved noise reductions.
