Vessels arrive or depart a port for other ports as well as inland waterways and offshore, and many different vessels utilize ports, not only the oil and gas industry, so it is necessary to distinguish between vessel classes and destinations to reliably describe activity and usage patterns. Ports represent distinct locations while offshore is a continuous and expansive region. Offshore activity occurs at a specific location, but once a vessel is offshore, movements are complex and unlike airplanes, vessels do not declare their destination(s), and therefore, offshore events need to be inferred. The conceptual framework used to count vessels is outlined and the processing steps required with the automatic identification system data are described. Marine vessels do not always follow well-defined patterns and pathways; additional assumptions are thus required when enumerating events. Some of the rules to categorize and enumerate offshore and onshore events conclude the chapter.
