Mobile robot competitions have been around for well over 40 years, with the Micro Mouse Contest being the first of its kind in 1977. These competitions have inspired generations of students, researchers and hobbyists alike, while consuming vast amounts of funding, time and effort. Competitions provide a goal together with an objective performance measure, while extensive media coverage allows participants to present their work to a wider forum.
