Shear failure is sudden and destructive, making the prediction of shear strength of concrete structures crucial. This study proposes an external vertical prestressed reinforcements (EVPRs) strengthening method for box girders. Based on the traditional CSCT (Critical Shear Crack Theory), a revised shear strength CSCT for box girders strengthened by EVPRs is proposed. A flange influence coefficient is proposed, and the shear contribution of EVPRs as stirrups and the concrete shear contribution is calculated using the stress increment of EVPRs. Nonlinear three-dimensional finite element models are used to verify the reliability of the revised shear strength CSCT using the CDP model of Abaqus. The comparison results indicate that the proposed revised shear strength CSCT for box girders is reasonably.
