Abstract The Transrapid transportation system is a magnetic levitation train which is regarded to be inherently safe. Methods and models to quantify risk caused by external and internal hazards of the Transrapid transportion system are described. Most procedures to assess consequences and frequencies of accident scenarios had to be developed. The methodology allows to manage risks and supports the safety certification process for a specific link. The system is as least as safe as any high speed transportation system with a dedicated track.
