Abstract Why RDE? The wording real driving emissions was created due to the growing discrepancies of vehicle emissions measured by the laboratory tests NEDC (New European driving cycle) and emission results from “real driving” on the road. In these NEDC tests on a roller test bench are no uphill driving, slopes, additional accessories like climatic control, seat or window heating included. This was neither regulated by the EU nor tested at a certification and let to discrepancies between test and real live emissions. Next to that, the average acceleration at the NEDC test procedure is calculated with 0.324 m/s2 and a maximum speed of 120 kph is tested, which is not representative for normal driving in countries with higher speed limits. Due to these circumstances the NOX emissions and CO2 measures at real live exceed currently the limits measured at the NEDC on the roller test bench.
