Several casualties, huge economic loss, and serious environmental problems around the globe have been reported due to the failure of tailings dams facilities. The incidence of failure discharges a huge volume of debris material flowing downstream side. The major parameters that control the flow of any failed material are highly interlinked with rheological properties such as yield stress and viscosity. In the present study, efforts are made to understand the rheological and strength behavior of coarse tailings (passing 0.425 mm) of bauxite residue (BR) under different moisture contents, varying from 38 to 48%. Additionally, vane shear tests are conducted on BR to measure the undrained shear strength. Yield stress measurements are made with the help of dynamic shear rheometer having parallel plate geometry. The same is also measured by slump tests using cylindrical slump mold. Rheological behavior was studied using the Herschel–Bulkley model. Based on the produced data of various experiments, correlation for yield stress versus undrained shear strength is proposed. It is found that both the rheological properties and the undrained strength of BR decrease on increasing the moisture content. The BR is found to be showing non-Newtonian characteristics and shear-thinning behavior at different moisture contents.
