The primary science objective of the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission is to collect a regolith sample from the surface of asteroid Bennu and return the sample to Earth. The first part of this goal was accomplished in October 2020 when OSIRIS-REx successfully captured a sample of regolith from asteroid Bennu. To accomplish this, the spacecraft flight software utilized several autonomous Guidance Navigation and Control (GN&C) algorithms including an optical navigation system referred to as Natural Feature Tracking (NFT). This system was the first of its kind to be flown on an exploratory space mission. During the touch-and-go (TAG) sample collection event, NFT produced spacecraft state updates using surface terrain as the basis of its relative pose estimates. NFT had two primary functions during the TAG event: providing a state estimate used by the guidance system to update the maneuvers targeting the TAG site and predicting and monitoring the location and time of contact with the surface. This paper provides an overview of the TAG event and discusses the performance of the GN&C system for delivering the spacecraft to the targeted TAG site.
