Abstract Ball Aerospace and the Air Force Research Laboratory are developing a high-capacity, high-efficiency, long-life 10 K space cryocooler system to meet applications that include Very Long Wave Infrared Instruments. To meet the stringent new requirements, which are several factors improved over the current state of the art, the program is developing the technology for a hybrid J-T cryocooler coupled with a Stirling precooler. This paper provides a top-level overview of the 10 K Cryocooler Development Program including a description of the cooling system, the key technology developments, and the program status and schedule.
