The radiation mechanism for rolling noise is shared between the vehicle wheels and the track (rails and sleepers), both excited by the combined roughness of wheels and rail. Depending on the track characteristics and vehicle speed, track noise can often be the dominant source during a pass-by. In the context of EU-funded project ROLL2RAIL WP7, a methodology was developed for the separation of track and vehicle rolling noise based on the Advanced Transfer Path Analysis (ATPA). Field tests were carried out under controlled conditions and results showed separation of track and vehicle noise could be obtained for specific rolling stock on a specific track. This paper describes the work performed and presents the detailed results obtained by the ATPA method. The outcome of this work shows a possible application to a wider range of cases, in order to achieve track and vehicle noise separation for different types of rolling stock on different types of track.
