The rapid economic and social development has increasingly highlighted urban traffic issues during recent years. Despite the gradual upgrades to transportation infrastructure within metropolitan areas, typical urban traffic problems, e.g. peak hour congestions, unreasonable signal timing, and an imperfect road network layout, are continuing to persist. This paper investigates four representative traffic intersections in Hanzhong, Shaanxi Province, China to address the challenges. Through field surveys and data collection, signal phases, timing, geometric design, and traffic flow characteristics at the intersections were analyzed. In addition, traffic improvement proposals are validated using CAD, SUMO, and SYNCHRO simulation software. The results indicate that the proposed optimization measures can effectively alleviate traffic congestion in the region to a certain extent and improve traffic efficiency. The results of this may provide a theoretical basis for traffic optimization in Hantai District and serve as a reference for addressing similar traffic issues in other urban areas.
