Abstract In the context of the holistic design and development of control devices in cars, haptics and acoustics, besides providing a clear feedback, are becoming more important as quality aspects. Previous research has therefore yielded haptic and acoustic design recommendations. However, these design recommendations include defined single parameters, but no range in which high quality is still achieved. In order to specify an adequate tolerance zone of perceived high quality for controls, a four-part study was conducted to identify the difference thresholds. The first part investigated the acoustic pitch of control devices. The second, third and fourth parts of the study investigated selected haptic parameters of rotatory and translation controls.
