Enhanced vision or synthetic vision is receiving increasing attention as a possible substitute to traditional autoland systems as a means of achieving landings in low-visibility conditions. The attraction centers on the assertion that these sensor-based systems, when combined with a modern head-up display, offer greater capability to more runway ends than autoland, which requires a suitable runway with a high integrity radio signal and complementary runway lighting. Enhanced vision also promises new capability for taxi and takeoff guidance as well. This paper explores the operational characteristics of several possible systems and compares their respective operational capability and economic contribution.
