A system which accepts a two-dimensional scene as input and produces an image of the scene as output introduces degradations to the image which cause a loss of information about the original scene. A mathematical model is described which, under certain assumptions about the scene, the transformations and the noise sources, models the effects of these degradations on the original scene and on the ability of any algorithm to classify objects in the scene.
