Rainfall can significantly diminish the skid resistance of highway pavements and adversely affect driving conditions, thereby increasing the likelihood of traffic accidents. As highways expand and widen, the pathways for rainwater drainage from the pavement have notably increased, which may lead to inadequate drainage on super-elevated gradual curves and at the bottoms of concave vertical curves, severely compromising driving safety. This study analyzes traffic accident data collected from a wide-pavement highway in southeastern China between 2021 and 2022 using accident mining techniques. It examines various factors including time, location, vehicle type, causes of accidents, and morphological characteristics associated with rainy-day traffic incidents while identifying high-risk points or segments on wide-pavement highways during inclement weather. For specific sections exhibiting poor drainage capabilities, this paper proposes implementing drainage pavements as a remedial measure. The findings indicate that the highest accident rate occurs from May to August (the rainy season), peaking at 8.67% between 13:00 and 16:00 daily; small cars are predominantly involved in these incidents; improper operation and loss of vehicle control are identified as primary causes; while collisions—particularly rear-end collisions—are noted as common morphological features. The introduction of drainage pavements in local areas with inadequate drainage has proven highly effective, resulting in an average reduction in accident rates by 65%. This research provides valuable technical insights and guidance for enhancing safe driving practices on wide-pavement highways.
