Optical instrumentation for space applications has to cope with a wide range of environmental loads on ground, during launch and in space. These loads in connection with long lifetimes in space and often demanding optical performance requirements are driving elements in the design of space optics. This paper will give an overview of the various environmental loads to be taken into account for space optics design. The associated degradation effects and their potential influences on the instrument performance budgets will be described. The consequences of these considerations for the optical instrument design concept and the selection of materials and technologies will be discussed.
