A statistically based tracking algorithm is presented that utilizes contrast in intensities and target edges to separate a target image from the background scene. Having the ability to select either contrast or edges to separate the target image, the tracking algor-ithm demonstrates a remarkable ability to locate and track tank images in very noisy background scenes. When there is low contrast between the target and background, the algorithm utilizes edge information to locate and track the target. On the other hand, if there is good contrast, then intensities are used to separate the target from the background. Both of the separation techniques are implemented with a Bayesian statistical decision rule. Sample output of the tracking algorithm using IR focal plane array imagery is shown.
